More on linking literacy accross curriculum April 20, 2008

I wanted to say that I am a HUGE supporter of early literacy education. I have two children and read to them since birth. Both of them are accelerated readers and do exceptionally well in Language Arts, writing, and on their ASK tests. Reading is a springboard to so many other talents and abilities. It is the foundation to all other subjects. We can’t learn Science if we can’t read and understand what we’ve read. Education World is one of my favorite websites. I go there often for ideas, tips, and to read the latest information. A lot of my blogs will be based on things I read there. This blog’s link is to an article on integrating reading and writing across curriculum. I realize that I have posted similar to this with Tovani, but I believe this is crucial to our students success. This article is by Cathy Puett Miller. She addresses a few basic strategies to link reading and writing across curriculum and offers additional resources.

I strongly agree with you that early literacy education is important. My parents read to me ever since I was a baby also, and I attribute my interest in reading and success in school to them. In order for us to function in life we must know how to read and write. I never really took the time to visit Education World, but I am so glad that you metioned this site. I really like it now that I visited it. The article that you posted the link for was really interesting to read, and I agree with Cathy Puett Miller that it is important to teach literacy for all subjects.

You will love Education World. There are so many things to find there. Lesson Plans, tips for success, class management, organization, you name it. I love it.

Literacy is a passion of mine. I believe in it down to my core. I loved my teaching Literacy course because it pointed out how literacy goes accross curriculum and it offered so many strategies to help students take in the content. I don’t save many books, but Tovani’s is one I refer back to often.

Oh i am so glad that you posted the article from Education World, I am definiatly bookmarking this site. I didn’t realize that it had lesson plans and everything. I am excited to use this new found website!!

I feel the exact same way about Literacy. I feel that it is truly important in everything that we do. A lot of people complain about the Teaching Literacy class and how it is useless to them. I, on the other hand, love it as well. It is so cool learning about all the strategies that help students to take in information in all content areas and help them with comprehension.
