Important Writing Spaces April 3, 2008

Writing spaces, or places to write, that I personally use most frequently include my mind, a scrapbook, and on the computer.  Each one is unique with specific characteristics.  My mind is a place that I can silently write information that I want to say orally.  It is a place that I can think up and write what I want to put down on paper.  My mind is a personal writing space that allows me to write or record my thoughts.  A person’s mind is unique; it is a sacred place where a person can write things he or she may not want to share.  I often write in my mind at night when lying in bed.  A scrapbook is an informal place to record thoughts, feelings, and memories; it is to be shared.  A scrapbook is unique; it can be used for many different occasions and reasons.  Scrapbooks could be used for projects, in memory of someone, a gift, or a collaboration of events.  Scrapbooking is a way to be creative, express thoughts, and to help a person to relax.  The computer and keyboard is a writing space that I use on a regular basis.  It allows one to form written words by simply pushing keys on the keyboard.  It is unique and convenient that words can be just as easily deleted as they can be added.

My mind and the computer are an example of two writing spaces that show remediation.  Remediation is when one type of technology involves another in some way.  In this case, computers remediate the mind.  The mind is a writing space that is much older than the computer.  As mentioned, the mind is a place where one can construct and write his or her thoughts.   This is continuously done when writing words on the computer.  In order to type the words onto the screen, we go through a thought process where we ultimately write things in our minds first.
